Got a Business Name Idea on Friday Night? You Don’t Have to Wait Until Monday

September 18, 2026

It’s Friday night.

You’re at a pub with a few friends, plus a couple of people you’ve only just met. Food keeps arriving. Drinks are on the table. Everyone is talking about work, side projects, annoying problems, and things that really ought to exist but somehow don’t.

Then someone says something.

Maybe it’s just one sentence:

“Why doesn’t somebody make a service that does that?”

And suddenly, you have an idea.

Not just a vague maybe-I-should-start-a-business-someday idea.

A real one.

You can already picture what the business would do, who might use it, and — somehow — the perfect name pops into your head too.

You pull out your phone and type it into Notes.

You look at it again.

Still good.

Now what?

Great business ideas don’t keep office hours

Business ideas have terrible respect for schedules.

They show up while you’re walking the dog, taking a shower, sitting on a train, having coffee on Sunday morning — or halfway through a Friday night conversation.

They rarely wait until Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Fortunately, checking a Canadian business name doesn’t have to either.

With GetNuans, you can order jurisdiction-specific NUANS reservation reports online for:

You don’t need to visit an office, make a phone call, or wait for regular business hours just to get the process started.

You can submit your proposed name online and have your report prepared electronically.

No driving across town.

No waiting until Monday morning.

Your Friday night can stay Friday night.

So what does a NUANS report actually do?

NUANS is the Government of Canada’s business name and trademark search system.

A NUANS report searches for existing corporate names and trademarks that are identical or potentially confusingly similar to your proposed name.

For a NUANS reservation report, the proposed corporate name is entered into the NUANS database and reserved there for 90 days.

That gives you time.

And that part matters.

A NUANS reservation does not mean your company has been incorporated, and it does not guarantee that the relevant government authority will approve the name.

It is one step in the naming and registration process.

But it means you don’t necessarily have to make every other business decision tonight.

Save the idea. Then sleep on it.

This might actually be the best part.

Getting excited about a business idea does not mean you need to build the entire company before bedtime.

You do not need to immediately:

  • design the logo;
  • build the website;
  • open a bank account;
  • order business cards;
  • choose accounting software;
  • create five social-media accounts; or
  • dramatically announce that you are quitting your job on Monday.

You can simply take one practical step while the idea is fresh.

Check the name.

Get the report.

Save the idea.

Finish your evening.

Go home safely.

Then sleep on it.

Tomorrow morning, make some coffee, look at the name again and ask yourself:

Do I still like this idea?

If the answer is yes, great.

Now you can start thinking about what comes next.

90 days gives you room to think

According to the Government of Canada’s NUANS guidance, a proposed corporate name on a reservation report is reserved in the NUANS database for 90 days.

That window gives you some breathing room to work through the less spontaneous parts of starting a business.

You might use that time to:

  • research your potential market;
  • check whether a suitable domain name is available;
  • look at competitors;
  • speak with potential customers;
  • work out your pricing;
  • decide whether incorporation makes sense;
  • research the filing requirements for your jurisdiction; and
  • figure out whether the idea from Friday night still looks as promising on Monday morning.

There is a useful distinction here:

Move quickly on the idea. Take your time on the decisions.

A reservation report gives you an opportunity to do exactly that.

A NUANS reservation is not the same as name approval

This is an important point.

Ordering a NUANS reservation report does not automatically approve your proposed business name.

The report shows identical and potentially confusingly similar corporate names and trademarks, and the proposed name is reserved in the NUANS database for the applicable 90-day period.

You still need to complete the appropriate registration or incorporation process for the jurisdiction where you plan to operate.

Requirements can also differ depending on the province, territory, and type of filing you are making.

So think of the NUANS report as a step in the process — not the finish line.

What if the idea turns out to be terrible?

Then you learned something.

Maybe Saturday morning arrives and the name suddenly sounds ridiculous.

Maybe you research the market and discover ten companies already solving the same problem.

Maybe your friend texts you:

“About that business idea last night…”

…and neither of you can remember why it sounded so brilliant.

That’s okay.

Not every idea needs to become a company.

The valuable part is being able to investigate a promising idea when it appears, without turning the whole thing into a major project.

And once in a while?

That random Friday-night conversation really does become something.

Business ideas can happen anytime

Maybe tonight’s idea goes nowhere.

Maybe six months from now you’ve forgotten all about it.

Or maybe it becomes the business you’re still running ten years from now.

There is no way to know that on Friday night.

But when you have a name worth exploring, getting a NUANS report shouldn’t require reorganizing your weekend around somebody else’s office hours.

GetNuans lets you order your NUANS report online, with straightforward pricing and electronic delivery.

So when the idea arrives, you can take the first step.

Then get back to your Friday night.
